What to expect.

Hello! I’m Jason and I'll be your host and guide for this astrophotography tour. Located in the northwest of Melbourne, Australia and home to Victoria’s largest salt lake, Lake Tyrrell is the perfect place to take stunning night photographs over the lake’s reflective surfaces.

On the initial day, I'll provide a concise introduction to astrophotography, equipping you with fundamental knowledge and tools essential for capturing remarkable nightscape images akin to my own.

Throughout the subsequent days, you'll shadow me as I identify and explain the compositions I choose, allowing you to grasp my precise workflow and various approaches to capturing stunning images. Alternatively, you're welcome to explore the landscapes surrounding our shooting location independently, capturing your own images. I'll be available to offer tips or feedback to enhance your photography experience.

Taking off in early June 2024, there are two consecutive 3 night tours exploring and capture stunning night-time photographs in picturesque Lake Tyrrell, Victoria.

The tours cost $1800 per person, which includes accommodation and transfers^. Full payment is needed prior to secure your spot*.

This workshop is limited only to 5 people so don’t miss out and reserve your spot today.

Itinerary.

In my experience of running workshops, it does not work to have a fixed schedule. Weather conditions can be unpredictable so I like to have a plan but have it flexible depending on the outdoor conditions. Below I’ve outlined what would be covered in each tour.

  • Check-in is at 1500, then meet in Lake Tyrrell Accommodation courtyard for a quick briefing at 1600.

1700 we will break for dinner and meet back at the courtyard at 1830 when we will muster and head to our first night photography location on Lake Tyrrell. Focusing on time lapse photography and stacking.

  • After a good night's sleep you can explore the town of Sea Lake in the morning, or even go for a sunrise shoot at the lake.

We will meet at the courtyard at 1500 to head out to the next night shoot location for scouting before sunset. This will allow us to visualize compositions that we will take when the stars come out, and for those who wish, get some golden hour landscape images. We will then break for dinner and meet back at the same shooting location at 1800, before darkness fully sets in. We will work on stacking and focus stacking together to bring incredible clarity throughout the entire image.

  • The morning will be a post processing workshop starting at 0900 and will go for approximately 3 to 4 hours. We will edit your images together from start to finish touching on some of my tried and true techniques to bring the image to life.

We will then break for lunch.

We will again meet at the courtyard around 1700 to head to our third night shoot location to learn scouting and visualizing compositions for when the stars come out. We can also take some sunset landscape images while we explore. This will be a night you can practice everything we have learned.
